The Road Less Taken

My journey began in Shillong, a place I often return to when Meghalaya calls. From there, I set out on a long drive towards Tura, the cultural heart of the Garo Hills. The road wound through rolling hills, sleepy villages, and forests that seemed to stretch endlessly. Each mile carried me further away from familiar Meghalaya and deeper into the unknown South Garo Hills.
From Tura, I continued to Baghmara, a remote town bordering Bangladesh. The closer I got, the more the air seemed to change – quieter, denser, as if nature was whispering a secret. Locals spoke of a place where rivers turned turquoise and gorges swallowed the sun. That place was Wari Chora.
The Final Stretch
Reaching Wari Chora isn’t straightforward. After Baghmara, the road narrows and jolts into off-road terrain. A local jeep carried me part of the way, but the rest had to be on foot. The trail wasn’t marked; it was raw, wild, and full of anticipation. I trekked through dense forests, across bamboo bridges, and down steep slopes, guided only by locals who knew the land like the back of their hand.
And then, suddenly, it appeared.
First Glimpse of the Hidden Gem

The forest opened to reveal a river that looked almost unreal – crystal-clear turquoise waters winding through towering cliffs. Boats waited silently at the banks. As I stepped into one, the oar dipped, and ripples broke the mirrored surface of the river.
The canyon walls rose around me, tall and unyielding, their reflections shimmering in the water. Every bend felt like stepping into another world – a waterfall hidden behind a rocky curtain, a cave echoing with the drip of unseen springs, shafts of sunlight breaking through the dense canopy above.
Myths That Guard the Gorge
![]()
Wari Chora isn’t just about what you see – it’s about what you feel. The locals call it the land of the Seven Giant Serpents. Legends say they guard the gorge, ensuring only those who come with respect can pass safely. Elders whisper that the river carries the voices of ancestors, guiding travelers who listen and warning those who don’t.
The forests surrounding the gorge are considered sacred groves, protected for generations by the Garo people. Walking through them, I couldn’t shake the feeling that every rustle of leaves and every bird call was part of something ancient, something alive.
Nature’s Untouched Masterpiece

Though it feels timeless, Wari Chora is a fairly recent discovery in the world of travel. For years, even many locals didn’t know of its existence. In 2023, botanists discovered a new plant species here – Peliosanthes meghalayensis – proof of how untouched and biologically rich this land is.
The water is so clear you can see pebbles at the bottom. Schools of fish dart between rocks, and the cliffs, weathered by centuries, hold stories in their silence.
When to Go
The best time to visit Wari Chora is November to April, when the skies are clear and the river is calm. The monsoon transforms it into a roaring wilderness, beautiful but inaccessible.
More Than Just Wari Chora
As breathtaking as Wari Chora is, the North East is never about just one destination. Time your journey to experience the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, where tribes come together in a vibrant explosion of music, dance, and tradition. Or catch the Cherry Blossom Festival in Shillong, where the hills turn pink and white, celebrating nature’s fleeting beauty.
Why This Journey Matters
Travel is often about discovery, but sometimes it’s about listening – to rivers, to legends, to the silence between the trees. Wari Chora reminded me that adventure isn’t only about the places we reach but the stories we carry back.
So, if you’re seeking an offbeat Meghalaya experience, a journey into a gorge wrapped in myth and wonder, remember the name that’s whispered by waters and guarded by serpents: Wari Chora.
And maybe, like me, you’ll wonder why you didn’t come sooner.
